Helping Young People with Capability, Confidence, and Calling

Career coaching for young adults - because it can be hard to pick a livelihood

Career coaching for young adults can be super helpful, as deciding what to do for a living is a pretty big deal, with implications in like a dozen directions. When a young person feels significantly “stuck” in not knowing what they want to do with their life, it can be frustrating and demoralizing.

It can also be hard because pursuing any meaningful livelihood calls for hard work, navigating uncertainty, lots of learning and some degree of risk-taking. The exercise of sorting it all out (and then signing up for it) can actually be scary.

This “what to do with my life?” challenge is really quite common. I have known many talented, well-adjusted people who have struggled in this way.  And I have specific thoughts – and successful experience – in helping people target and achieve happy employment.  (read my blog post on it.)

We start by doing these things…

Assembling an assessment of your strengths, weaknesses, passions, likes, dislikes and growth objectives.

Mapping what you will seek in an employer and a job — what will make you happy.

Scanning different industries, lines of work and employment possibilities to identify which match best for you.

Getting Grounded in Who You Are

Career coaching can help you to find your way. Here is what we would do…

Figure out what you want

Career coaching can be super helpful as young adults can (with urgency, uncertainty and anxiety) stand way too close to the job-finding exercise.

First time jobseekers ask — Where will I find a job? What do I even want to do?? Can I navigate the job marketplace and hiring processes? And am I even a great candidate? Why would someone hire me??

People with a few years of experience ask – Where do I go from here? What kind of work will excite me? How can I get on a track for growth in responsibilities and income?

So people can wander the on-line job postings looking for inspiration that they never seem to find.

I first guide clients to pull back from the grab bag of possibilities, and work a bit on the foundations of what they are trying to accomplish.

When young people consider these things with honest self-reflection – without fear or apology – they begin to appreciate that they a) don’t suck, b) have something to offer, and c) can articulate their intentions to others with confidence.

Career coaching helps you to think through (and then declare)…

Did COVID Knock You Off Track?

Go get it!

When people are early in the working years, they of course have limited experience to draw on. So thoughtful career coaching can improve their jobseeking effectiveness significantly. I structure and attend to job-hunting topics as follows…

Together we will work on...

We develop and then practice how you will tell your story with compelling positive energy. Who you are, what you want, what you are capable of. We practice it in detail so the words will flow comfortably and credibly when the time comes.

Networking is such an important part of the information-gathering and job-hunting work, but it is counter-intuitive and flat out scary for many young adults. We spend time appreciating, and then practicing, the power of intentional, entrepreneurial networking.

We dive deeply into understanding the interview processes, what to expect and interviewing strategies. Then we do practice interviews to help you be relaxed and ready to do great.

Some job hunts also call for…

The purposeful, granular development of your resume helps you to groom how you position yourself, anticipate what employers are looking for, and plant seeds for winning interviews.

It’s the marketplace and meeting place for professionals, so it’s got to be right.

LinkedIn, Monster, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, etc. Together we build your ability for how to navigate and maximize effectiveness on these platforms. Pretty quickly we narrow to working with one or two that best fit the kind of positions you are seeking.

Get up to speed successfully

Career coaching support does not necessarily end when you land that job.

The first months on a new job are a critical time to set the foundations for success. It’s called “onboarding.” In those early days, a new employee faces multiple learning curves at the same time. It can be really challenging! Some managers are attentive to helping new employees onboard successfully – but others are not.

It can be very helpful for a young person to have a behind-the-scenes career coach (with a ton of practical experience) to help them understand the topics at hand and navigate situations effectively and with confidence.

Career coaching can help you to stay on track while…
